Learning: The names of 2D shapes The properties of shapes: corner, side, curved side, straight side
You will need: Shapes: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval either from a jigsaw type game or cut from card. Different sizes would be good
Put one shape in a bag without your child seeing. Ask your child to feel the shape and guess which one it is. Discuss- How they know which shape it is? Is there another shape it could be? Put several of the same shapes in the bag and discuss- Can you find others that have the same name? How many are there that have the same name? Let your child draw round the shapes and cut them out, counting the sides and corners as they do. Talk about the number of corners each shape has and the number of sides. Talk about how some shapes have curved sides and some have straight sides.

Make shapes using playdoh or sticks and string.· Roll out the dough into long lengths if using rather than using cutters. This will help your child count the number of sides and corners.· Challenge your child by giving them clues e.g Can you make a shape that has 3 sides. What is it called?· Can you make a shape that has 2 long sides and 2 short sides? What is it called?

Ask your child to create a picture of a robot by cutting out different shapes for its body, head, legs and arms. They can be as creative as they would like to be! If you have shapes to draw round, use those. If not ask you child to draw round boxes, lids, bottle tops or draw the shapes for them.
