Our Writing Units

Each year in December we carry out a two week unit based upon stories, novels and films.  These units were written with our mission statement in mind, encouraging children to think about others and what they can give in the build up to Christmas.

Cycle A

Our Cycle A units are based upon film clips from the Literacy Shed and all have purposeful, written outcomes.  Within each unit, we focused on developing children's knowledge of nouns and planned a range of practical lessons for each age group.

  • The EYFS unit was based upon Kindness Elves and carrying out kind acts
  • The KS1 unit was based upon Mog's Christmas Calamity and the Nativity story
  • The LKS2 unit was based upon Coming Home and the Christmas story
  • The UKS2 unit was based upon The Man on The Moon and monologues written in role

Cycle B

Our Cycle B units are based upon stories and novels and we focused on developing children's knowledge of verbs. Outcomes included a snowman trail, dramas from character perspectives, a class book of children's own stories and mangers for Jesus.

  • The EYFS unit was based upon One Snowy Night and carrying out lots of practical tasks
  • The KS1 unit was based upon the Snowman and included a wide range of opportunities to take learning outdoors
  • The LKS2 unit was based on Papa Panov and children wrote their own versions of the story
  • The UKS2 unit was based on A Christmas Carol and gave children the opportunity to write and perform their own play script.

Examples of our units can be found in our Subject Leader File in School.
