Phonics at Salesbury

Phonics is a key foundation of the Reading curriculum and is taught systematically and daily throughout the Early Years and Key Stage One.

At Salesbury we use the Monster Phonics scheme to support the teaching of Letters and Sounds. Monster Phonics covers all the statutory requirements of Letters and Sounds and the Key Stage One National Curriculum for synthetic phonics.

Monster Phonics categorises the 44 sounds into 10 categories and each of these 10 categories are represented by a Monster which is colour coded. The colour represents that way of spelling the sound.  Each of the Phase Two and Three graphemes and Monsters have a corresponding action to use which supports the Monster Phonics’ multisensory approach. The characters help the children remember how to read and pronounce the graphemes.

During our lessons we use the suggested Monster Phonics animations, stories and songs to teach the phoneme and graphemes.  This allows us to ensure our lessons are fun, interactive and engaging for our children.
