Tuesday 5th May

Good morning Mars Class!

here are the lessons for today:

Maths warm up. Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 8 times table. Find something to count, like pasta, paperclips, monkey nuts or marbles. You will need 96 of them to lay out 12 columns of 8. See photo below. Once you have 12 columns of 8 objects, count in eights, forwards and backwards, touching one column each time you count on. Practise again, starting from different multiples of 8.

Maths main. Adding and subtracting numbers with up to three digits. Look at the bar model in the example first of all. Read and understand the different number sentences that can been made. Then add and subtract to find the missing numbers in the other bar models. See PowerPoint below.

English. Look back at The Stone Trolls. First analyse the underlying plot pattern. See page 16 of the Talk for Writing booklet. Then think about writing a new version of this story, use ideas on pages 17 and 18 of the booklet. Now plan your own story using the planner on page 19 of the booklet. Remember, it has to be a Warning Story!

Guided Reading. Flat Stanley. Read and/or listen on YouTube to Chapter Two - Being Flat.
Flat Stanley to read:

Flat Stanley to listen: YouTube (from 2:30 to 7:42 mins)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVsiFx9ZyFo

After reading/viewing chapter Two, pretend you are Stanley and write a letter to your
friend. Use these sentence starters/ideas to help write your letter, e.g. Dear…  You won’t believe…  Yesterday, I was…  Everyone in my house thought…  Today, I have…  It was…  I felt…  I wonder what will happen tomorrow. Please write back! From Stanley.

Check all sentences for spelling and punctuation.

Art. For a second time, by popular demand, you are invited to explore drawing tutorials by the children's author and illustrator, Rob Biddulph. Choose from the selection and Rob will show you how to draw pictures from scratch. Just visit:
