The use of computers and computer systems is an integral part of the National Curriculum and knowing how they work is a key life skill. In an increasingly digital world there now exists a wealth of software, tools and technologies that can be used to communicate, collaborate, express ideas and create digital content.

At Salesbury Primary School we recognise that pupils are entitled to a broad and balanced computing education with a structured, progressive, approach to learning how computer systems work, the use of IT and the skills necessary to become digitally literate and participate fully in the modern world. The purpose of this policy is to state how the school intends to make this provision.

Computing draws on our ability to wonder why things happen and then aim high to produce the best possible outcome. Often, we need to seek within to find a solution to a problem. A high percentage of our children will use computing to serve others, in the future.

Since computers are a part of the creation, and God commanded our ancestors to exercise dominion over the creation (Genesis 1:28). Computing in Theology provides a better understanding of both religion and the world wide web, leading to a new acceptance of ancient and modern differences.

Curriculum Intent.png

At Salesbury Primary School, we believe that Computing is an essential part of preparing children for life in an increasingly digital world. Our curriculum provides a broad, balanced and progressive education through the three core areas of Computing: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy.

Pupils develop computational thinking and problem-solving skills through programming and coding, learn to use technology purposefully and creatively, and understand how to stay safe and responsible online. We aim to equip children with the confidence, resilience and digital skills needed to succeed in education, future careers and everyday life.

Through engaging and cross-curricular learning opportunities, pupils become responsible, confident and creative users of technology who can apply their Computing skills across a range of contexts.

At Salesbury Primary School, Computing is taught through weekly lessons and enhanced through cross-curricular opportunities across the wider curriculum. Our curriculum is based on the Teach Computing Curriculum and Barefoot Computing resources, which provide a clear and progressive sequence of learning that fully covers the National Curriculum.

Pupils develop skills across the three core areas of Computing: Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy. Through engaging and practical lessons, children learn to code, solve problems, create digital content and use technology confidently and purposefully. Learning is revisited throughout school to build knowledge, confidence and independence.

Online safety is embedded throughout the curriculum and regularly reinforced through classroom learning, PSHE and participation in Safer Internet Day. Pupils are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.

Our Computing curriculum enables pupils to become confident, creative and responsible users of technology. Children develop skills across Computer Science, Information Technology and Digital Literacy, preparing them for the next stage of education and life in an increasingly digital world.

Pupils learn to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly, while developing problem-solving, computational thinking and communication skills. The impact of our curriculum can be seen through pupils’ digital work, pupil voice, lesson observations and ongoing assessment using platforms such as Google Classroom.

Through engaging learning experiences, children develop confidence, independence and the ability to apply their Computing skills across a range of contexts.
